Information - Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Audubon Sanctuary The Sanctuary is renowned for its Sandhill Cranes. Many pairs of cranes nest in the area and hundreds more gather here during fall migration (September to mid-November). Late afternoon visitors during that time of year can see well over 2,000 landing in the sanctuary during that time. The Sanctuary is always open to visitors, and during the fall on weekends sanctuary greeters will be available to answer questions. Don't hesitate to ask to look through the telescopes that visitors often bring with them. You can also see many Cranes feeding in the fields in the area in the spring, summer and especially the fall. The Phyllis Haehnle Sanctuary is located 6 miles northeast of Jackson, Michigan on Seymour Road. See Driving Directions to find us. Bird List - Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Audubon Sanctuary The list is arranged in the order established by the American Ornithological Union (1983). The Harold Wing Observation Site provides a panoramic view of Mud Lake Marsh for wetland birds. Entrance into the Mud Lake Marsh is by written permit only. Birding along mowed trails is good for seeing grassland, shrub and woodland birds as you pass through these habitats. In spring, the trees along the west side of the grassland and woods north of Eagle Lake are good for neotropical migrants. Large flocks of waterfowl can be seen in the spring south of the Portage River Drain. Park near the Wooster Rd. bridge and walking east along the dike. Do not proceed beyond the private land signs. Information - Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Audubon Sanctuary Michigan Audubon's largest bird sanctuary is located in Jackson County bordering the Waterloo Recreation Area. At 963 acres, it is mostly known to attract thousands of migrating Sandhill Cranes every fall. However, the diversity of animal and plant life includes over 270 plant species and 200 species of birds. Benches on a hill overlooking Mud Lake Marsh provide an ideal location for viewing large numbers of cranes in October and early November. A restored wetland and grassland demonstration area at the west side of the sanctuary is accessed from Wooster Rd. Public access to the marsh is restricted.
